Meletos | Winemaker of the Month, May 2024

Introducing our Winemaker of the Month for May, Caroline Mooney, the mastermind behind Bird on a Wire. Named after Leonard Cohen's 1968 song, Bird On A Wire Wines inspire a timelessness reminiscent of the song that inspired the winery's name.

Caroline views winemaking as a balance between intuition, instinct and science. Her winemaking philosophy revolves around allowing each wine to authentically reflect the essence of its terroir and the seasonal nuances, permitting the vineyard to take centre stage, with the grapes being the true heroes of the wines she produces.

As a founding member of Yarra Valley Wine Women, Caroline is actively involved in the local wine industry.  The collective is dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the wine industry. Originating during Caroline's time renting a winery in Healesville, this group serves as a hub for networking and advocating for the representation of women winemakers. Caroline marvels at the scope of winemaking styles showcased within the group, a testament to the richness that emerges when different voices come together.

When it comes to enjoying a glass of Bird on a Wire Wine, for Caroline it really depends on the time of the year. On summer evenings, she prefers a backdrop next to the river, allowing herself to emerge in the sound of the water running and the birdlife. In winter, she’d prefer to enjoy her wine at a cosy gathering beside the fire, with food roasting in the oven, finding comfort in sheltering from strong weather.

Join Caroline at Meletos for a wine list takeover on Friday May 30, 2024 from 12pm - 3pm.
